Caricom nationals don’t need a Tourist card or Visa and can enter the country with a valid passport.

Tourist card  

Nationals of the following countries are allowed to purchase a Tourist card. 

The Netherlands / Belgium / France / Germany / United Kingdom / United States of America/ Canada / Bolivia / Chili /Paraguay / Peru / Uruguay / Venezuela.

NB. all other nationalities need to apply for a Visa before entering the country.

To purchase the Tourist card, you need to submit:

  • a valid passport (at least 6 months validity upon arrival in Suriname)
  • a return flight ticket (or tickets(s) of the final destination)
  • Additional documents for example in case of: Travelling with a minor; required documents confirming parenthood/legal guardianship.

Where can you purchase the Tourist card.

  • The Tourist card can be obtained at 3 (three) locations, namely:
  • 1.    At the Visa department of the Consulate General of the Republic of Suriname in Amsterdam, Monday through Friday from 09.00 – 15.00 hours (and all other Diplomatic and Consular Missions of the Republic of Suriname abroad)
  • 2.    At the “Tourist card counters” at Schiphol International Airport, Netherlands.
  • Opening hours: The Tourist card counters will be open for every SLM and KLM flight to Suriname to provide services during at least 2 (two) hours of the respective check-in times.
    Directions: the Tourist card counters are easy to reach through Departure hall 3, Entrance A (in front of check-in point 30)
  • 3.    Upon arrival at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport in Suriname (all incoming flights).

How much does the Tourist card cost?

  • The costs for the Tourist card are 20 euro in Europe (elsewhere also 25 US$)

Nationals of the Caricom countries are expelled from visa or tourist card.

Credit Cards

The major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are accepted at the major hotels, some commercial banks and view larger shops. However, cash is widely accepted.

.  In and around Paramaribo and Nickerie are plenty of ATM’s where you can use your banking pass to withdraw cash.


Tap water comes from (SWM, Suriname Water Company) and is spring water. It is clean and completely safe to drink. However some people prefer bottled water. Bottled water can be purchased, with a choice of several brands throughout almost all the stores in the country.

News papers

Three daily newspapers and one evening paper are available. The Times of Suriname has a special English section.


WiFi is widely available in hotels, restaurants and bars in tourist area’s.


Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap. They do not have meters, so it is wise to agree on the price before setting off.


The time in Suriname is three hours behind of GMT and two hours ahead of EST.

Banking hours

Most commercial banks are open from Monday-Friday from 07:30 – 14:00 and some banks are open on Saturday as well.

Shopping Hours

Monday – Friday 08:00 – 16:30, Saturday 08:00 – 13:00. On Sundays most supermarkets and malls are open and in general also in the evenings.

Medical care

There are several well equipped modern hospitals with well trained and skillful doctors and health care workers. Several pharmacies in and around the cities ensure a regular and adequate supply of medicines and health products. The location of rostered 24-hour pharmacies is announced in the newspapers each Friday. If you are planning to go deep into the interior, seek advice in advance about whether you should use malaria profylaxis.

Necessary vaccinations

Hepatitis A, DTP, typhus and possibly yellow fever. Malaria profylaxis are not necessary for the coastal area and the same applies for some jungle trips. You can ask your GRP at home for a prescription (for example Malarone for 14 days), so you can buy the pills locally if necessary.
